When you think of geospatial intelligence, the usual thing that comes to mind is land-based -- satellite images of strategically important military sites, but one area that is commonly overlooked is that of maritime intelligence, of which geospatial is playing an increasingly important role, being used in law enforcement and humanitarian missions, giving them greater insight than ever before. One man pushing the boundaries of what is being achieved at sea, geospatially speaking, is Guy Thomas, Science & Technology Advisor to the US Coast Guard. We spoke to him at DGI 2012 to find out just how geospatial tech is playing a critical role at tying together the global intelligence picture in a way never before possible.

For the first time ever, India has offered to share real-time intelligence of maritime movements in the Indian Ocean with 10 countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri-Lanka and Mauritius. The move is aimed to counter the threats related to human trafficking, smuggling and territorial disputes in the South-China Sea. It comes at a time when China is becoming increasingly aggressive in the South China Sea region. China had recently set-up its first off-shore base in the Horn of Africa country of Djibouti. To counter China, India is now looking at a cooperative approach instead of going alone. Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said that the offer has been very positively received. The Navy chief gave the statement at the Goa Maritime Conclave (GMC) where the Indian Navy for the f...

“Standardisation of the maritime intelligence industry needed now” - Dryad Maritime leads the way. As it relaunches to mark its 10 year anniversary Dryad Maritime is today, Wednesday 13th September, calling on the maritime industry to develop a Standardisation Agreement (STANAG) setting minimum standards for the production of intelligence. The threat is changing. Ship owners and operators no longer simply face a sporadic pirate threat in the Indian Ocean but are routinely deploying armed security teams to counter the threat of Water Bourne IED in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait located between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula, and Djibouti and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa. Without up to-date practical research and development supported by the expert collation of intelligence the industry will b...
This video highlights the Discovery Machine Maritime Console. This is the first of two parts and focuses on how behaviors can be created rapidly for the Joint Semi-Automated Forces simulator. The behavior showcased in this video is designed to control a frigate class surface ship. The process to define a behavior including a mission, reactionary behaviors, and a situation awareness processor are discussed. A quick overview of a Discovery Machine Behavior Model and its parts is also included. For more information or to view more demonstrations visit: www.discoverymachine.com/demos
This video is an overview of our Global Maritime Intelligence KMZ. The advantages of our product are: Clients receive the intelligence report in a digital format that can be utilised with their operations mapping. Operations staff therefore have the latest intelligence overlays with analysis at their fingertips. We can incorporate imagery and video links that are directly accessible with just the click of a button. Digital intelligence summaries are easier to disseminate and more accessible, especially if they are being sent to personnel aboard ships. As oppose to the usual hard copy reports we are giving you all the data electronically, which can then be saved and used again and again for reference or analysis. The KMZ is produced weekly, and the reporting period is from Friday-Thur...

This video highlights the Discovery Machine Maritime Console. This is the second of two parts and focuses on Discovery Machine behavior models at run-time. Intelligent behavior models showcased in the video are deployed in the Joint Semi-Automated Forces simulator. The primary behavior showcased is that of an automated SH-60B helicopter. The video demonstrates how a simulated entity can send requests to a human operator for certain permissions throughout a training mission. Based on the human response, the helicopter will adapt its behavior and perform the appropriate action. Visual execution of behavior models at run-time are also discussed. Rolls-Royce presents a vision of a future land-based control centre in which a small crew of 7 to 14 people monitor and control a fleet of remote controlled and autonomous vessels across the world. The crew uses interactive smart screens, voice recognition systems, holograms and surveillance drones to monitor what is happening both on board and around the ship. Remote and autonomous ships are one of three elements of the company’s innovative Ship Intelligence strategy, which will enable customers to transform their marine businesses by harnessing the power of big data. The film marks the final stage of research that will inform the design and construction of an effective remote operations centre which is essential to the company’s plans to develop autonomous and remote controlled vessel...
